Cancer and Polyphenol-Rich Olive Oil

Cancer is one of the most significant health concerns globally and in our country. To prevent cancer, it is essential to maintain a healthy diet, engage in physical activity, and avoid harmful habits such as smoking and alcohol consumption. In healthy eating, olive oil holds an important place. Olive oil is a plant-based oil that forms the basis of the Mediterranean diet, protecting against chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and obesity. But did you know that olive

oil is also effective in fighting cancer?

The protective effect of olive oil against cancer is due to its polyphenols, antioxidant compounds that give olive oil its taste, aroma, color, and also promote cell renewal, reduce inflammation, and combat free radicals. The impact of polyphenols on cancer occurs by regulating cell division, triggering the death of abnormal cells, and preventing DNA damage.

The anticancer effect of polyphenols has been scientifically proven. For example, the EPIC study conducted on more than 40,000 Spaniards in Europe showed that consuming 1 tablespoon of olive oil per day reduced the risk of death from any cause by 26%. Additionally, the Perimed study demonstrated that consuming 2 tablespoons of olive oil daily reduced the risk of breast cancer by 68%. Olive oil has also been reported to have positive effects on colon, lung, and prostate cancers.

Which olive oil contains more polyphenols? The polyphenol content of olive oil varies depending on the olive variety, harvest time, production method, and storage conditions. Generally, extra virgin olive oil obtained from early-harvested green olives contains more polyphenols. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recommends consuming olive oil with at least 200 mg/kg polyphenols daily to experience their beneficial effects. Olive oils containing over 250 mg/kg polyphenols are categorized as healthy olive oils in Europe.

In conclusion, olive oil is both delicious and healthy. Including high polyphenol olive oil in our daily diet can be beneficial in preventing cancer. However, it's important to remember that olive oil alone is not sufficient. A balanced and varied diet, regular exercise, and a healthy lifestyle can collectively strengthen our defenses against cancer.
